The Basque Country stretches across 3,000 square kilometres of south-west France, where the Pyrenees tumble into the Atlantic along a coastline that includes some of Europe's most celebrated surf breaks at Biarritz, Anglet and Hossegor. From the elegant seafront of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the red-and-white timbered villages of the interior, the region packs remarkable variety into a compact area — Bayonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is just 53 km, yet the landscape shifts from tidal estuary to mountain foothills in under an hour. You can follow the GR10 trail markers through the Iraty Forest, one of the largest beech woodlands in Europe, or cross the Col d'Aubisque at 1,709 metres for panoramic views of the high Pyrenees. The coast road from Hendaye to Bayonne (roughly 35 km) threads past clifftop viewpoints, sandy coves and harbour towns ideal for overnight stops. Inland, Espelette is famous for its chilli peppers, while the fortified citadel at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port marks the traditional starting point of the Camino de Santiago. Compact distances and well-maintained roads make the Basque Country perfect for campervan travel, whether you prefer beachside pitches or mountain aires. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across the region, giving you flexible pick-up points and a personal welcome to this corner of France.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through the Basque Country. The Fêtes de Bayonne in late July draws over a million visitors for five days of music, bull-running and street festivities — book your Yescapa hire early for that period. Autumn brings the Espelette Pepper Festival in late October, a colourful celebration of the region's iconic chilli harvest. Summer offers warm Atlantic waters and long evenings on the coast, while spring and early autumn are ideal for quieter mountain routes and lower peer-to-peer hire prices through Yescapa. Campsites along the Basque coast stay open well into October.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 80 km coastal drive follows the clifftops from Hendaye to Bayonne, passing Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bidart. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy surf beaches, harbour-side dining and panoramic viewpoints. Ideal for campervans, with several seaside aires along the Basque Country shore.
A 120 km loop through the Basque Country interior over 3–6 days, linking Espelette, Ainhoa and Sare — three of France's Plus Beaux Villages. Wind past chilli-pepper-draped façades and pastoral hillsides. A campervan is perfect for the narrow lanes and village stopovers.
Cover 250 km in 5–8 days circling the Basque Country's mountain fringe. Start in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, climb to the Iraty Forest, then descend via Tardets-Sorholus and Mauléon-Licharre. Motorhomes handle the well-surfaced D-roads comfortably, with mountain aires for overnight stays.
This 350 km route over 5–8 days links Biarritz on the Atlantic to the Col d'Aubisque in the high Pyrenees, via Bayonne and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. You experience the full Basque Country spectrum — surf, farmland and peaks — with campsites at every stage.
A 500 km circuit over 7–11 days taking in Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the Iraty Forest before looping back along the Nive valley. Suits both campervans and motorhomes, with a mix of coastal campsites and mountain stopovers.
At 650 km over 10–15 days, this route extends east into Béarn, connecting Hendaye, Pau and the Ossau valley before returning through the Basque Country via Navarrenx. Motorhome-friendly roads and well-spaced service areas make this an easy long-distance trip.

The Basque Country offers campsites ranging from beachfront pitches with ocean views to peaceful mountain spots beside Pyrenean streams. Coastal sites around Bidart and Hendaye typically provide full hook-ups, laundry facilities and Wi-Fi, while inland options near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Espelette sit among green hills with generous motorhome service points. Most sites cater to both campervans and larger motorhomes, with hardstanding and electric hook-ups as standard.
Most roads in the Basque Country are toll-free departmental routes, though the A63 motorway connecting Bayonne to the Spanish border and northward to Bordeaux does charge tolls — payable by card or cash at booths. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 and pay higher rates. On the autoroute, the speed limit for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 110 km/h (90 km/h in rain), while lighter campervans follow standard car limits of 130 km/h. The inland D-roads winding through the Pyrenean foothills are generally well surfaced but narrow in places, so take care with larger vehicles on mountain passes such as the Col d'Osquich.
We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.
Frederic was excellent. Easy to contact and helpful at all times. The whole experience was a joy.
Fantastic, we were welcomed and everything was fantastic.
We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
Mario was very helpful and supported us with this new experience. The vehicle was basically brand new and while there were some minor problems with cupboard doors, it was a very well equipped and comfortable van for 2 adults and two children of 10 and 13 years old. Highly recommended!
We had a fantastic experience renting Gilbert’s campervan and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to book through Yescapa. Everything was easy and straightforward from the initial booking right through to collecting the campervan. Gilbert was incredibly friendly and welcoming and took plenty of time to show us around the campervan and explain how everything worked before we set off. My spoken French is very limited, but Gilbert was extremely patient and accommodating, and with the help of translation apps we were able to make both the collection and handover really easy and smooth. The campervan was great and had everything we needed for our family adventure around Brittany. This was our first ever campervan holiday, and we absolutely loved the experience. A big thank you to Gilbert and his wife for being so welcoming and helpful. We would definitely recommend renting from Gilbert and would happily book his campervan again in the future!
