Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Basilicata

Basilicata — a region worth exploring

Basilicata's ancient city of Matera, with its Sassi cave dwellings carved into limestone ravines, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1993 and served as the European Capital of Culture in 2019. This compact southern Italian region sits between two coastlines — the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east — offering a remarkable variety of landscapes within a relatively small area. From Matera to the seaside town of Metaponto, the drive is roughly 45 km, while the route from Potenza to the Pollino National Park covers around 100 km through forested mountain roads. The Pollino massif, shared with Calabria, rises to 2,267 metres at Serra Dolcedorme, making it the highest peak in the southern Apennines. Along the Tyrrhenian coast, the town of Maratea is watched over by a 22-metre statue of Christ the Redeemer, perched on Monte San Biagio. Inland, the Lucanian Dolomites near Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa create a dramatic backdrop of jagged sandstone towers, connected by the Volo dell'Angelo zipline. Basilicata's quiet roads and uncrowded countryside make it ideal for campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of space to explore at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your trip — whether you want a compact van for winding mountain passes or a larger motorhome for a family adventure along the coast.

Best time to visit

Late spring through to early autumn is the prime window for a campervan trip in Basilicata. May and June bring warm, settled weather that suits both the Ionian beaches and the mountain trails of Pollino National Park. In July, Matera hosts the Festa della Bruna, a centuries-old celebration featuring a spectacular procession and fireworks — well worth timing your visit around. September and October are excellent for quieter roads and harvest-season flavours, with local sagre (food festivals) popping up across the region. Through Yescapa, you can often find more competitive hire prices outside the peak summer weeks, thanks to flexible peer-to-peer pricing set by owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Basilicata

Basilicata's main artery is the Basentana (RA5/E847), a dual carriageway linking Potenza to Metaponto that is toll-free. Most roads in the region are free to use, though you will encounter tolls on the A3 motorway if you cross into Campania or Calabria. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits — 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on dual carriageways, and 50 km/h in towns. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on main roads. Many inland routes are winding and narrow, so allow extra time for mountain stretches, particularly around the Pollino area.

This was an excellent campervan for our party of 4 adults (and can easily sleep 6). Everything we used in the van was great and worked well. The large fridge/freezer and awning was helpful. Toilet and shower worked well. João was great throughout the whole process. He was really quick and helpful in all his communications before the trip, and during check-in he was really thorough with explaining all of the van's systems (even though we didn't speak Portuguese). We had a minor accident, and João was very reasonable and fair about the repairs. All together a very good experience, thank you!

We thought our holiday was over before it had even started when our own motorhome broke down… then we found Yescapa. The booking process was easy to follow, and we were so grateful that the owners of the motorhome we hired were incredibly lovely and understanding of our situation. The hired motorhome was ideal for us, and we were able to finish our holiday and had an amazing time.
