Baden-Württemberg is home to the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, Germany's oldest scenic road, stretching 60 kilometres through the northern Black Forest between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt. This south-western German state packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a compact area — from the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee) to the forested peaks of the Black Forest and the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Swabian Alb. The university city of Heidelberg sits roughly 120 kilometres north of Freiburg, and both make excellent bases for exploring the surrounding countryside. You can follow the Neckar Valley past Burg Hornberg and Burg Guttenberg, two medieval castles perched above the river, or head south to Mainau Island, the famous flower island on Lake Constance. The road network is well maintained and suits both campervans and larger motorhomes, with plenty of dedicated stellplätze (overnight parking areas) dotted across the region. Smaller roads wind through vineyard-covered hills along the Baden Wine Road, while wider routes connect Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Konstanz. Whether you fancy a short break in the Neckar Valley or a fortnight circling the entire state, Baden-Württemberg rewards you with variety at every turn. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Baden-Württemberg, choosing from a wide range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your travel style and budget perfectly.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Baden-Württemberg, when campsites across the Black Forest and Lake Constance are fully open. The Stuttgart Beer Festival (Cannstatter Volksfest) runs from late September into October and is well worth timing your visit around. Spring brings cherry blossom along the Baden Wine Road, while autumn colours in the Swabian Alb are spectacular. Book early for July and August — these are the most popular months. Outside peak season, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitively priced motorhome hire from local owners keen to keep their vehicles on the road year-round.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.

Baden-Württemberg offers a wide choice of campsites, from forested pitches in the Black Forest to lakeside spots along the Bodensee. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. You will also find many stellplätze across the region for convenient overnight stops between longer stays. Facilities vary, but larger sites often include Wi-Fi, laundry, and on-site shops.
Germany's motorways (Autobahnen) are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, so you can travel freely across Baden-Württemberg without extra charges. On unrestricted sections, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h, while those under 3.5 tonnes may drive up to 130 km/h where no limit is posted. The A8 and A81 are the main arteries connecting Stuttgart to Lake Constance and the Black Forest. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along these routes. Mountain passes in the Black Forest and Swabian Alb feature well-graded roads, though some narrower stretches suit campervans better than large motorhomes.
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
