Athens is home to the Acropolis, where the Parthenon has stood for nearly 2,500 years — a monument visible from almost every corner of the city. Beyond this iconic hilltop, you can wander through the Ancient Agora of Athens, once the heart of civic life, or explore the National Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world's finest collections of Greek antiquities. The lively Plaka neighbourhood sits at the foot of the Acropolis, offering narrow pedestrian streets lined with tavernas and artisan shops. For a change of pace, head to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, a striking modern complex designed by Renzo Piano, complete with gardens and a public library. Athens also makes a superb base for day trips: the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is roughly 70 km to the south-east, while the ancient city of Corinth lies about 90 km to the west along the motorway. The Attic coastline stretching south from the city centre offers wide coastal roads well suited to larger vehicles, so you can move between beaches and archaeological sites with ease. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Athens area, which means flexible pick-up points across the city and genuine tips on where to park and what to see. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to begin your Greek road trip.
Athens enjoys a long travel season. Spring, from April to June, is ideal for exploring archaeological sites in comfortable warmth, and you can catch the Athens Epidaurus Festival, which runs from June through August with open-air theatre and music performances across the city. September and October bring pleasant temperatures and quieter campsites along the Attic coast. Summer remains the most popular period, so booking your campervan on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice from local owners and the best peer-to-peer rates. Even winter has its appeal — Athens rarely drops below 10 °C, and you can visit major sites without the crowds.
Athens is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
This 70 km coastal drive follows the Athens Riviera south-east past Vouliagmeni Lake and Varkiza Beach. End at the Temple of Poseidon, perched on the cliff edge with panoramic sea views. Several lay-bys along the coast road offer convenient campervan parking for a swim stop.
Head 90 km west on the E94 motorway to ancient Corinth, where you can explore the Temple of Apollo and the Acrocorinth fortress above the town. Cross the Corinth Canal on foot via the pedestrian bridge. Motorhome-friendly parking is available near the archaeological site entrance.
Drive 180 km south-west through the Peloponnese to Nafplio, pausing at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus en route. Climb the 999 steps to Palamidi Fortress for sweeping harbour views. Campsites with full hook-ups dot the coast between Tolo and Nafplio, ideal for a multi-day stay.
This 170 km route north-west crosses the Boeotian plain before climbing to Delphi, home to the ancient Oracle and the Temple of Apollo. Stop at the hillside village of Arachova for local cheese and wine. Designated motorhome parking is available below the archaeological site.
Travel 350 km north-west to the towering rock pillars of Meteora, where six monasteries cling to sandstone columns. Break the journey at Thermopylae to see the Leonidas monument. Campervan parking areas in Kalambaka offer easy access to the monasteries and overnight stays.
Cover 500 km north-west on the E75 to Greece's second city. Stop at the Vale of Tempe gorge and the archaeological site of Dion at the foot of Mount Olympus. Thessaloniki's waterfront promenade and the White Tower await. Several campsites near Perea offer seaside pitches for motorhomes.

Campsites in the Athens area cater to both campervans and motorhomes, with options ranging from coastal spots along the Attic Riviera to greener inland settings. Most offer electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, and dedicated hardstanding pitches for larger vehicles. Because central Athens has no campsite within the city limits, the surrounding towns of Nea Makri, Marathon, and Loutraki provide the nearest facilities, all within easy driving distance.
Parking a larger vehicle in central Athens requires some planning. Most city-centre streets are narrow and have height restrictions, so it is best to park on the outskirts and use public transport into the centre. Overnight parking in a campervan or motorhome is generally tolerated in designated car parks but not on residential streets. Always check signage for height and weight limits before entering any underground or covered facility.
