Asturias is the only Spanish region to hold UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status across its entire territory, a recognition of landscapes that shift from rugged Atlantic coastline to the snow-dusted peaks of the Picos de Europa in under 50 km. The drive from the lively port city of Gijón to the medieval capital of Oviedo covers just 30 km, yet the scenery changes dramatically between urban waterfront and rolling green valleys. Along the coast you can visit the Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) near Colunga, walk the Bufones de Pría blowholes, or explore the fishing village of Cudillero with its amphitheatre-shaped harbour. Inland, the Covadonga Lakes sit at over 1,000 m altitude inside the Picos de Europa National Park, while the pre-Romanesque churches of Oviedo — including Santa María del Naranco — are a World Heritage Site dating back to the 9th century. Narrow mountain roads and winding coastal lanes make a campervan the ideal way to travel here, giving you the freedom to stop wherever the view demands it. Larger motorhome drivers will find well-maintained main roads linking all major towns. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Asturias, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your route, your group size, and your budget.
May to October is the prime window for exploring Asturias by campervan, with the warmest months — July and August — perfect for coastal drives and mountain hikes. In late August, Gijón hosts the Semana Grande festival, filling the city with open-air concerts and fireworks. September brings the Fiesta de la Sidra Natural in Nava, celebrating the region's famous cider tradition. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads and widely available campsite pitches, while Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive hire prices outside peak summer weeks. Book ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of vehicles.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km route follows the Asturias shoreline from Llanes to Gijón, passing the Jurassic Museum near Colunga and the Bufones de Pría blowholes. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy beach stops and seafood villages. Ideal for campervans on quiet coastal lanes.
A compact 120 km loop from Oviedo through the green valleys of central Asturias, taking in Santa María del Naranco and San Julián de los Prados. Over 3–5 days you can explore cider houses in Nava and the Senda del Oso cycling path. Suits any vehicle size.
A 250 km route through the Picos de Europa National Park, from Cangas de Onís to the Covadonga Lakes and on to Potes. Plan 5–8 days for mountain walks and gorge viewpoints. Campervans handle the narrow passes more easily than larger motorhomes.
Covering 350 km across Asturias, this route links Villaviciosa's cider cellars with the hilltop village of Taramundi and the ethnographic museums of Grandas de Salime. Allow 5–8 days. Well-spaced campsites make it comfortable in a motorhome or campervan.
A 520 km drive tracing the full Asturias coastline from Tapia de Casariego in the west to Llanes in the east, with detours to Cudillero and Luarca. Set aside 7–11 days. The A-8 motorway offers easy stretches between scenic coastal diversions.
This 600 km circuit combines the coast at Gijón with the high peaks around Somiedo Natural Park and the Picos de Europa. Over 10–15 days you experience beaches, alpine lakes, and bear-watching country. A campervan gives you flexibility on mountain roads.

Asturias offers campsites spread from its sandy Atlantic beaches to the foothills of the Picos de Europa. Coastal sites typically provide direct beach access alongside electric hook-ups, hot showers, and dedicated motorhome service areas. Inland, mountain campsites sit among forests and rivers, with pitches suited to campervans of all sizes. Many sites across Asturias stay open from March to October, and several operate year-round.
Most roads in Asturias are toll-free, including the A-8 motorway that runs along the coast from Ribadeo to Santander. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3,500 kg match standard car limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Vehicles over 3,500 kg must reduce those limits by 10 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways. Mountain passes such as the Puerto de Pajares (N-630) feature tight bends and gradients, so take your time and use lower gears. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are well signposted along the A-8 and A-66.
The best experience ever!! Amazing van and amazing people who run it
Muchas gracias. Gary y Michelle
Lovely experience and fantastic van. Clean and worked very well. Leonardo and Eleanora were very friendly and helpful. One small feedback is the fridge did not work very well but otherwise its a great van.
Muy buena experiencia. Ana nos ha tratado muy bien.
Proprietários espetaculares e super atenciosos. Autocaravana estava impecável, super confortável, excelente condução. Painéis solares dão autonomia total. Tudo impecável.
We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!
