Valle d'Aosta packs over 100 castles into just 3,263 square kilometres, making it the most castle-dense region in all of Europe and a remarkable destination for a road trip. Nestled in Italy's far north-west corner, this compact Alpine valley is framed by four of the continent's highest peaks — Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso. The drive from the regional capital, Aosta, to Courmayeur at the foot of Mont Blanc covers roughly 35 kilometres, while the route south-east from Aosta to the Gressoney valley stretches around 65 kilometres, giving you a sense of how manageable distances are here. Along the way, you can explore the remarkably preserved Roman theatre and Arch of Augustus in Aosta, wander through the medieval Fénis Castle, or follow trails into Gran Paradiso National Park — Italy's oldest national park, established in 1922. The valley's single main road, the SS26, threads through the heart of the region, with side valleys branching off towards glacier-fed lakes and traditional Walser villages. Compact valley roads suit campervans particularly well, though wider motorhomes can navigate the main routes with ease. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across northern Italy, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that let you tailor your Valle d'Aosta adventure to your own pace and style.
Valle d'Aosta rewards visitors year-round. June to September is ideal for hiking in Gran Paradiso National Park and driving the high-altitude passes, with the Fête de la Musique livening up Aosta's streets each June. In late January, the Fiera di Sant'Orso — a craft fair dating back over a thousand years — fills the capital with artisan stalls and folk traditions. Campsites at higher altitudes typically open from May to October, so plan accordingly. Booking your campervan through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, plus quieter roads through the valleys.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 60 km loop from Aosta follows the Dora Baltea river past Fénis Castle and the fortress at Issogne. Ideal for campervans, the route keeps to gentle valley roads with well-signed laybys for breaks. Allow 3–5 days to explore each castle at leisure.
A 30 km drive from Châtillon up the Valtournenche valley towards Breuil-Cervinia, with the Matterhorn looming ahead. Compact campervans handle the winding ascent well. Spend 3–6 days hiking, visiting alpine pastures and sampling local Fontina cheese.
Covering 120 km across the Cogne, Valsavarenche and Rhêmes valleys, this route circles Gran Paradiso National Park. Campsites with motorhome service points sit at each valley entrance. Allow 5–8 days to take in ibex-spotting trails and glacial waterfalls.
This 40 km route heads west from Aosta through Morgex's high-altitude vineyards to Courmayeur, gateway to Mont Blanc. Suitable for both motorhomes and campervans, with dedicated parking areas in Courmayeur. Plan 5–7 days to hike the Val Ferret trails.
Stretch across 100 km from Pont-Saint-Martin in the east to Courmayeur in the west, taking in Roman ruins in Aosta, the castle at Verrès and the thermal baths of Pré-Saint-Didier. A motorhome gives you space for 7–11 days of comfortable valley exploration.
An 80 km circuit linking the Gressoney, Ayas and Champorcher valleys beneath the Monte Rosa massif. Traditional Walser villages dot the route, and quieter campsites suit campervans perfectly. Set aside 7–10 days to explore each valley's distinct character.

Valle d'Aosta's campsites are spread across the main valley floor and up into the side valleys, giving you easy access to both towns and mountain trails. Most sites offer hardstanding pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water and waste disposal for motorhomes and campervans alike. Several are open from spring through to autumn, with facilities including hot showers, laundry rooms and small on-site shops. Choosing a base in a different valley each few nights is a great way to experience the variety Valle d'Aosta offers.
Valle d'Aosta is served by the A5 motorway, which connects Turin to the Mont Blanc Tunnel and on into France. Tolls apply on the A5 and can be paid by card or cash at barrier booths. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as a higher vehicle category, so expect slightly higher toll charges. The speed limit on the motorway is 130 km/h for cars but 100 km/h for motorhomes above 3.5 tonnes. Many side valleys are reached via narrower regional roads with occasional hairpin bends, so take your time on mountain stretches and check height restrictions before entering tunnels.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
