Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Alps

Alps — a region worth exploring

The Route des Grandes Alpes stretches 684 km from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, crossing 16 mountain passes above 2,000 metres and ranking among Europe's most celebrated driving itineraries. The French Alps span six départements, from Haute-Savoie in the north to the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the south, offering an extraordinary range of landscapes for a road trip. Annecy's crystal-clear lake sits just 35 km south of Geneva, while the Col du Galibier — at 2,642 metres one of the highest paved passes in France — lies roughly 280 km further south near Briançon. Between these two points you can explore the Vanoise National Park, the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park, and the dramatic Gorges du Verdon. Mountain roads are well maintained, though hairpin bends and altitude changes mean a campervan offers the ideal balance of manoeuvrability and comfort. Larger motorhome drivers will find plenty of spacious aires and dedicated service points in valleys such as the Maurienne and Tarentaise. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners based across the Alps — from Grenoble to Chambéry and beyond — giving you flexible pick-up options and a wide choice of vehicles suited to alpine touring. Whether you are chasing winter snow or summer wildflower meadows, the Alps reward every season with something memorable.

Best time to visit

The Alps are brilliant from June to September, when mountain passes are fully open and campsites operate at full capacity. July hosts the Tour de France's iconic alpine stages, drawing cycling fans to cols like the Galibier and Alpe d'Huez. In December, the Annecy Christmas Market transforms the old town into a festive lakeside spectacle. Shoulder months — May and October — bring quieter roads and lower prices, and through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model you can often find competitive hire rates even in peak season. Book early for July and August to secure the best choice of campervans and motorhomes across the region.

The Haute-Savoie to Briançon Traverse

420 km 5–8 days

This 420 km traverse takes 5–8 days, running from Chamonix beneath Mont Blanc south to the fortified town of Briançon. Cross the Col du Télégraphe and Col du Galibier en route. Best suited to campervans given the tight alpine switchbacks.

The Route des Grandes Alpes

The legendary 684 km road from Thonon-les-Bains to Menton crosses 16 major passes over 7–11 days. Highlights include the Col de l'Iseran and the Gorges du Verdon. Plan fuel stops carefully in the Alps — distances between stations can be long.

The Grand Alpine Circuit

600 km 8–15 days

A 600 km loop over 8–15 days taking in the best of the Alps, from Annecy through the Tarentaise valley to Gap and back via the Vercors plateau. Plenty of motorhome service areas and lakeside campsites make this a comfortable long tour.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Alps

France's autoroute network serves the Alps well, though most motorways here are toll roads — the A41 from Lyon to Chambéry and the A43 towards the Maurienne valley both use péage barriers where you pay by card or cash. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 vehicles and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Mountain sections feature frequent rest areas with motorhome service points, and many passes have height or weight restrictions clearly signposted in advance. Always check pass opening status before setting off, especially outside summer.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
