Why choose Adelaide for your road trip

Adelaide — a city worth exploring

Adelaide's Central Market has traded continuously since 1869, making it one of the largest undercover markets in the Southern Hemisphere. The city sits between the rolling Adelaide Hills to the east and the sandy shores of Gulf St Vincent to the west, giving you easy access to both coastal drives and countryside escapes. Stroll through the Adelaide Botanic Garden, explore the South Australian Museum on North Terrace, or catch a performance at the Adelaide Festival Centre on the banks of the River Torrens. For wildlife encounters, Cleland Conservation Park is just 20 km south-east in the hills, while the historic German-settled town of Hahndorf sits 28 km along the South Eastern Freeway. The wide, grid-pattern streets of the city centre — designed by Colonel William Light — are notably generous for larger vehicles, and the surrounding plains keep roads flat and straightforward as you head out on longer journeys. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, which means you often collect your vehicle from a suburban driveway rather than a distant depot. That peer-to-peer approach also tends to offer more flexible pick-up times and a personal introduction to the vehicle — plus insider tips on where to go next. Whether you are planning a weekend wine-trail loop or a week-long coastal adventure, Adelaide is a brilliant base to begin.

Best time to visit

Adelaide shines from March to May, when autumn warmth lingers and the Adelaide Fringe — the world's second-largest arts festival — fills the city each February and March. October to November is equally rewarding, with the Tasting Australia food festival drawing crowds in spring. Summer, from December to February, is ideal for beach stops along Gulf St Vincent, and campsites in the Adelaide Hills stay pleasantly cool at elevation. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform lets you compare prices across local owners, so you can often find competitive rates outside peak holiday periods. Book a few weeks ahead for Easter and Christmas school holidays to lock in your preferred motorhome.

Top getaways from Adelaide

Adelaide is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Adelaide to Barossa Valley

60km northeast 1–4 days

Head 60 km north-east from Adelaide into the Barossa Valley, one of Australia's premier wine regions. Stop in Tanunda for cellar-door tastings and continue to Angaston for the Barossa Farmers Market. Most wineries have spacious car parks that accommodate campervans with ease. Allow one to four days to explore at a relaxed pace.

Adelaide to Victor Harbor

85km south 1–3 days

Drive 85 km south from Adelaide to the seaside town of Victor Harbor. Walk across the causeway to Granite Island, spot southern right whales in season, and browse the shops along Ocean Street. Campervan parking is available near the foreshore. One to three days gives you time to enjoy the Fleurieu coastline without rushing.

Adelaide to the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island

150km south 3–6 days

Travel 150 km south from Adelaide through McLaren Vale's vineyards to Cape Jervis, then catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. Visit Seal Bay Conservation Park and Remarkable Rocks. Book ferry slots early for motorhomes, as vehicle space is limited. Three to six days lets you cover both the peninsula and the island comfortably.

Adelaide to the Clare Valley

130km north 3–6 days

Set off 130 km north from Adelaide to the Clare Valley, known for its Riesling Trail — a 35 km cycling and walking path between Auburn and Clare. Stop at Mintaro to see Martindale Hall and sample wines in Sevenhill. Campsite pitches along the trail welcome campervans. Three to six days suits a leisurely wine-country loop.

Adelaide to the Limestone Coast

300km southeast 5–8 days

Free and low-cost campervan stops dot the route. Five to eight days allows plenty of time for detours and nature walks.

Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges

310km north 5–8 days

Drive 310 km north from Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges and the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound. Stop at Quorn for the Pichi Richi Railway and hike the St Mary Peak trail. Campsites and parkings for recreational vehicles in Adelaide

Recommended campsites

Adelaide and its surrounds offer a good mix of beachside, suburban, and bushland campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most parks provide powered and unpowered pitches, dump points, hot showers, laundry facilities, and camp kitchens. Sites closer to the coast tend to fill quickly during school holidays, so booking ahead is worthwhile. Several parks sit within 15 km of the city centre, making them handy bases for day trips into Adelaide or out to the hills and wine regions.

  • Adelaide Shores Caravan Park West Beach (10km west)Powered and unpowered sites, swimming pool, dump point, laundry, BBQ areas, direct beach access

Where to park your motorhome

Adelaide's city centre uses metered street parking, and most bays have height or length limits that may not suit larger motorhomes. For oversized vehicles, dedicated car parks on the city fringe are your best option. Overnight parking on public streets is generally permitted unless signage states otherwise, but always check local council notices. The parklands surrounding the CBD offer several larger car parks where campervans can fit comfortably during the day.

  • Adelaide Showground Car Park, 2km southwest — Large open car park at Wayville with generous bays suitable for motorhomes. Often available outside event days. About 3 km south-west of the CBD.
  • War Memorial Drive Car Park, 2km north — Spacious parkland car park along the River Torrens, within walking distance of the Adelaide Oval and North Terrace cultural precinct.
  • West Beach Parks Car Park, 10km west — Beachside car park near Adelaide Shores with room for larger vehicles. Handy for a coastal stop before or after exploring the city centre.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
