Abruzzo's coastline stretches for 130 kilometres along the Adriatic Sea, yet within just 30 kilometres inland you can reach peaks above 2,900 metres in the Gran Sasso massif — the highest point in the Apennines south of the Alps. Along the coast, the Costa dei Trabocchi cycle path follows old railway tracks past traditional wooden fishing platforms, while inland the medieval hilltop town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio sits at over 1,200 metres with views across the Campo Imperatore plateau, often called "Italy's Little Tibet." From the seaside city of Pescara to the mountain town of L'Aquila is roughly 105 kilometres, a drive that takes you through gorges, forests and open highland in under two hours. Abruzzo offers a good spread of campsites, from beachfront parks along the Adriatic to mountain sites near Gran Sasso and Maiella. Most coastal campsites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks and pitches large enough for motorhomes, while inland sites tend to be smaller and quieter, with electric hook-ups and basic facilities well suited to campervans. Booking ahead in July and August is recommended for popular coastal spots.
Abruzzo's main motorway is the A25, linking Rome to Pescara and crossing the Apennines through a series of tunnels and viaducts. The A14 runs along the Adriatic coast, connecting Pescara to cities further north and south. Both are toll roads — you collect a ticket on entry and pay at exit, with cash, card or Telepass accepted. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classified differently and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on dual carriageways; heavier vehicles are limited to 100 km/h and 80 km/h respectively. Mountain roads inland, particularly around Gran Sasso, can be narrow and winding, so a campervan may be more manoeuvrable than a larger motorhome on these stretches.

We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
Mario was very helpful and supported us with this new experience. The vehicle was basically brand new and while there were some minor problems with cupboard doors, it was a very well equipped and comfortable van for 2 adults and two children of 10 and 13 years old. Highly recommended!
