Why choose Dublin for your road trip

Dublin — a city worth exploring

Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge has welcomed pedestrians across the River Liffey since 1816, making it one of the oldest cast-iron pedestrian bridges in Ireland. The city blends centuries of history with a lively cultural scene, from the Book of Kells at Trinity College Dublin to the vast collections inside the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street. You can wander through the elegant Georgian squares of Merrion Square, explore the grounds of Dublin Castle, or spend an afternoon at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. For green space, Phoenix Park stretches across 707 hectares on the city's western side — one of the largest enclosed urban parks in Europe and a wonderful place to stretch your legs. Beyond the city, the Wicklow Mountains lie just 40 km to the south, while the historic town of Drogheda sits roughly 50 km to the north, opening up easy day trips. Dublin's coastal setting along Dublin Bay means you can drive from the city centre to seaside villages like Howth or Dún Laoghaire in under half an hour, with roads well suited to larger vehicles. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the area, so you can pick up your vehicle in Dublin and set off with insider tips already in hand. A campervan gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace, whether you head south into the hills or north along the coast.

Best time to visit

Dublin is a rewarding destination throughout the year. Summer, from June to August, brings the longest days and ideal conditions for touring by campervan, with events like Bloomsday on 16 June celebrating the city's literary heritage. Autumn sees the Dublin Theatre Festival in September and October, a great reason to extend your trip. Spring offers quieter roads and campsites beginning to open for the season. With Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing that can be more flexible than traditional hire, especially outside peak months. Book a few weeks ahead for summer to secure the best choice of motorhome or campervan from Dublin-based owners.

Top getaways from Dublin

Dublin is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Dublin to Glendalough

50km south 1–4 days

Head 50 km south from Dublin into the Wicklow Mountains to reach Glendalough, home to a remarkable early-medieval monastic settlement and two glacial lakes. Stop at Powerscourt Waterfall along the way. Campervan parking is available near the visitor centre, and the valley trails suit all fitness levels.

Dublin to Drogheda and Brú na Bóinne

80km north 2–4 days

Drive 80 km north from Dublin to Drogheda, then visit the UNESCO-listed passage tombs at Brú na Bóinne, including Newgrange and Knowth. The motorhome-friendly car park at the visitor centre makes access straightforward. Allow time to explore the medieval streets of Drogheda itself.

Dublin to Kilkenny and Rock of Cashel

165km southwest 3–6 days

This 165 km route south-west from Dublin takes you through Ireland's Ancient East. Explore Kilkenny Castle and the Medieval Mile before continuing to the Rock of Cashel, a dramatic hilltop fortress. Campsites near Kilkenny offer full hook-ups, and the roads are well suited to larger vehicles.

Dublin to Galway

170km west 3–6 days

Travel 170 km west from Dublin to Galway, crossing the midlands via Athlone and its impressive castle on the Shannon. Galway's Salthill Promenade and the Spanish Arch are must-sees. Campervan-friendly sites sit just outside the city, giving you easy access to Connemara beyond.

Dublin to Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way

310km northwest 5–8 days

Cover 310 km north-west from Dublin to reach County Donegal, where the Slieve League sea cliffs tower 600 metres above the Atlantic. Stop in Sligo to see the grave of W.B. Yeats at Drumcliffe. Plan your motorhome overnight stays in advance, as coastal spots fill up in summer.

Dublin to the Ring of Kerry

270km southwest 5–8 days

Set off 270 km south-west from Dublin towards the Ring of Kerry, one of Ireland's most celebrated driving loops. Pass through Limerick and on to Killarney National Park before circling the Iveragh Peninsula. Campervan drivers should note some narrower stretches — travel anticlockwise for the best flow.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in Dublin city centre requires some planning. Most on-street spaces are limited in size, so purpose-built car parks on the outskirts are your best option. Overnight parking in public areas is generally not permitted for campervans or motorhomes, so always use a designated campsite for sleeping. Park-and-ride facilities let you leave your vehicle safely and hop on public transport into the centre.

  • Red Cow Park and Ride, 10km southwest — Large car park beside the Red Cow Luas stop, around 8 km south-west of the city centre. Spacious bays can accommodate bigger vehicles, and the tram takes you into Dublin in about 20 minutes.
  • Dún Laoghaire Harbour Car Park, 12km southeast — Situated at the harbour roughly 12 km south-east of central Dublin. Offers generous parking spaces with sea views, close to the East Pier walk and local cafés.
  • Malahide Castle Car Park, 15km north — Located beside Malahide Castle about 14 km north of Dublin city centre. A spacious car park well suited to motorhomes, with the castle grounds and Malahide village within walking distance.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Dublin

We rented Jorge’s lovely caravan for four days as a mother and daughter trip to celebrate a 55th birthday. It was our first caravan experience, and we honestly loved it! Jorge offers several convenient extras for a small fee, including airport transfers, cleaning. Despite our late-night flight from London, he met us on arrival, gave us a thorough tour of the caravan, and even suggested we record it on our phones, which proved very helpful. A bottle of cold water waiting in the fridge was such a thoughtful touch. After arriving at 1 am in 34°C heat with no open shops nearby, it was a huge relief. We had a small issue with the fridge and also opening the water refill cap, but Jorge happily helped us over a video call. We never felt abandoned - he was always kind, responsive, and professional. The caravan is practical, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Our deposit was also returned promptly. Thank you, Jorge, for making our first caravan holiday such a great experience and sorry about the hard to reach sauce spillage again!

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!
